- longtime online seller - new acct here in the pandemic yearfrom a personal collection, yes the pictures you see are always of the actual item
9.5 inches long
this is a weird one to explain origin of.
this came from a promo pile of a longtime Midwest concert promoter who had other GNR stuff from the same era including signed stuff. He had other rock promo stuff dating back to late 1970s and some stuff he got in the mail or for free that got put in closets.
We also remember getting the same patch as a promo (a sample maybe) in the mail around '88 at the record store and the owner immediately putting it in the display case to sell, I think we sold this size patch for 8 or 9 bucks, we only had a few this big, but I didn't open the package or I don't remember where it was from......and I swear a couple people that came in the store had this or a similar patch on their jean jackets.. The big embroidered roses are the thing that makes it memorable and make me think it is the same patch, cause we don't see any other exactly like this online like them. The roses are just short of 2 inches wide in diameter
seeing many knock off and copy versions of it down the line from official and unofficial sources. but none of them you see online matches this design exactly.
We know Brockum (one of the companies who make the tour merchandise for bigger bands and where record stores order t shirts from) made a smaller version of this patch 4 or 5 inches long but the design is different with the logo on top, not within the guns. Brockum was one of the companies that record store dealt with. So maybe they sent it and they made this patch in this larger size back then and it was also available on tour and in record stores later across the country.... I dunno. But, If so why arent there any for sale on ebay or pictures online? Similar ones yeah, but none as nice as this.
In neither of these examples, I don't know if these patches came from Brockum or another merchandise company or Geffen so, we don't wanna claim they were a "promo"..as it would be the only promo patch given out by a record company we've seen...
but this is swag of some kind and does date from '87/'88 and is a rare one to find in the context of GNR stuff of that era.
we looked through many pages of images and we can't find another example of this exact design on the web. if you remember more than us about this patch's lineage let us know.
